SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY CLASS: A PORTRAIT OF JOHN PHILIP SOUSA
Wednesday, May 18, 2016, 10:00—11:00 am
Please join us for this special opportunity class presented by Marcus L. Neiman, Artistic Director and Conductor for The Sounds of Sousa Band. Mr. Neiman will offer a presentation, complete with musical examples, on the man known by many as the March King. Mr. Neiman will talk about the extraordinary chance Sousa took when he left the security of his military commission and his directorship of the United States Marine Band to create his own Sousa Band.
Marcus L. Neiman (pictured right) created The Sounds of Sousa Band in 1990 to celebrate the centennial of the formation of John Philip Sousa’s professional band. Mr. Neiman has appeared throughout the entire Midwest with junior high, middle and high school, college and university, and community bands as a guest conductor, in his characterization of famed bandmaster John Philip Sousa. This season, in collaboration with the Washtenaw Community Concert Band and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs,Mr. Neiman will appear in a Sousa-style concert on May 22, 2016, at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, simulating a program Sousa himself conducted in Ann Arbor on April 8, 1899, as part of the Sousa Band’s Fourth Transcontinental Tour.
You will find additional information on the upcoming concert, A Portrait of John Philip Sousa (Sunday, May 22, 2016), at www.wccband.org. and on Marcus Neiman & The Sounds of Sousa Band at www.soundsofsousa.com.
